SUNSHINE VITAMIN
SUNSHINE SUNSHINE SUNSHINE!! Sunshine has been on my mind a lot lately, mainly because we are starting to experience it less and less heading into the winter months🥺 I thought I would give you some quick info on how healing it is, how it plays a role in vitamin D production and all the goodness that comes from it x
Let's start with vitamin D. It's a fat-soluble vitamin that our bodies produce when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D acts more like a hormone, playing a vital role in various functions throughout our body. One of its key benefits lies in its impact on our immune system.
-
Research has shown that adequate vitamin D levels are crucial for optimal immune function. It helps regulate and modulate our immune responses, enabling our defense mechanisms to work efficiently against invading pathogens . Soaking up some sunshine can help support our immune system, reducing the risk of infections and even autoimmune diseases.
-
Vitamin D is also essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It aids in the absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus, two vital minerals for skeletal health. Additionally, studies suggest that vitamin D may have protective effects against certain types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and even mental health conditions.
When sunlight touches our skin, a beautiful process takes place. Our bodies convert a precursor compound into active vitamin D, thanks to the magic of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. However, it's important to strike a balance: I like to go out in the sunshine without sunscreen so I am maximizing my vitamin D levels, however, I am very aware and cautious not to burn. As soon as I start to feel like I've had enough I will put on some natural sunscreen with no nasty toxins/layer up/ or go inside.
-
The ideal amount of sun exposure varies depending on factors such as where in the world you live, skin type, and time of day. Generally, spending around 15-30 minutes outdoors, near the hottest part of the day, a few times a week, can help maintain adequate vitamin D levels.
-
In some cases, such as during the winter months or for individuals with limited sun exposure, vitamin D supplementation may be necessary. I opt during the winter months for a good quality cod liver oil for my family. Staying away from any nasty synthetics or oils that have gone rancid. Rosita cod liver oil is our go to :)
The harmony between vitamin D, sunshine, and our overall health is undeniable & is something that should be in the forefront of your mind if you are looking to support your health in a holistic way
